India is now a major battleground for two modern weight-loss drugs: Mounjaro and Wegovy. These injections, already popular in the West, are now available in Indian cities and are creating a buzz among people with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how they compare, their prices, effectiveness and what’s happening in the Indian healthcare industry.
Mounjaro and Wegovy Overview
- Mounjaro, made by Eli Lilly, launched in March 2025 in India. It is approved for type‑2 diabetes, but also used for weight loss. It started with vials, but pen injectors are now being introduced to make it easier for patients.
- Wegovy, from Novo Nordisk, entered the Indian market in June 2025, and is officially approved for obesity and weight management. It comes in a user-friendly pen format.

How They Work
- Wegovy works as a GLP-1 receptor agonist—it slows digestion, reduces hunger, improves insulin response, and also helps reduce the risk of heart disease.
- Mounjaro is a dual agonist (GIP + GLP-1), which controls blood sugar more effectively and suppresses appetite more strongly. Some studies even show better weight loss with Mounjaro than Wegovy (source: Indian Express).
Price in India
| Drug | Dose Options | Monthly Price (Approx) | Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro | 2.5 mg to 15 mg | ₹13,125-₹25,781 | Both Vial and Pen |
| Wegovy | 0.25 to 2.4 mg | ₹10,850 -₹16,400 | Pen |
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are easier to use due to the pen design, but costlier, especially at higher doses.
Mounjaro is slightly cheaper and may offer better weight loss, and it is available in both vials and kwikpens.
Indian Market Demand
Mounjaro’s sales in India have surged dramatically since launch: by December 2025 Mounjaro recorded cumulative sales of about ₹600 crore since its launch in March 2025, with November sales alone at around ₹108 crore, highlighting continued strong demand.
Wegovy’s market traction is growing after price cuts: while still far behind Mounjaro in total value, Wegovy’s monthly sales climbed to roughly ₹27 crore in November 2025 following a price reduction, as uptake accelerates.
In terms of market share within the GLP-1/weight-loss segment: semaglutide-based therapies (including Wegovy and other semaglutide products) continued to hold a majority share (~two-thirds or more) of the Indian market by mid-2025, while Mounjaro’s tirzepatide accounts for a smaller but growing share (around ~8 % earlier and climbing).
The overall obesity/weight-loss drug market in India has expanded sharply: the GLP-1 agonist segment (driven by semaglutide and tirzepatide products) crossed over ₹1,000 crore in total sales by late 2025, up significantly from a few hundred crores in previous years.

Weight Loss Effectiveness
Wegovy users may lose up to 15% of their body weight, and in some cases, even 20% with added heart protection (as per Reuters).
Mounjaro has shown weight loss of up to 23% in global clinical trials.

Pros and Cons
Wegovy:
- Pros: Self-injection pen is easy to use, approved for cardiovascular benefits and structured dose escalation
- Cons: Higher cost at full dose, may become more affordable only after patent expiry in March 2026
Mounjaro:
- Pros: Slightly lower price, greater average weight loss in some studies, also treats type-2 diabetes
- Cons: Vial form is less convenient (pen version in India still coming), limited dosage flexibility in India
Who Should Take What?
If your main concern is weight loss + heart health, and you’re okay with paying more, Wegovy may be better.
If you have type 2 diabetes and also want weight control, Mounjaro could be a more effective and economical choice.
Important: Both are prescription drugs. You must consult a doctor before starting either.
What’s Next?
According to Livemint, several Indian pharmaceutical companies are preparing to launch generic semaglutide after the patent expires in March 2026. This could reduce prices by 60% to 90%.
Also, as reported by the Economic Times, Indian device makers are scaling up production of injector pens to meet future demand.
Final Words
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy offer new hope to Indians struggling with weight issues and diabetes. The right choice depends on your health profile, lifestyle and affordability.
Always consult a qualified doctor like Dr Rajat Goel before starting or switching any medical treatment.
