A year back, the choice was simple. If you wanted semaglutide in India, you bought Ozempic or Wegovy, and you paid Rs 10,000 or more every month for it. Today the picture is completely different. Since the patent expired in March 2026, you can walk into a chemist and find more than 20 generic semaglutide brands, some starting at just Rs 1,290 a month, sitting right next to Ozempic and Wegovy.
So naturally, every patient now asks the same thing: “Doctor, if it is the same medicine, why should I pay five times more for the original? And if I take the cheaper one, will I lose the same weight?”
In this article, we compare generic semaglutide vs Ozempic vs Wegovy side by side on price, results, doses, devices and approved use, and explain in simple words which option makes sense for whom.
Quick Answer
- Same medicine: Generic semaglutide, Ozempic and Wegovy all contain the same active molecule, semaglutide.
- Cheapest: Generic semaglutide, from about Rs 1,290 per month for vials and Rs 1,800 to Rs 4,500 per month for most pens.
- Ozempic: Rs 5,660 to Rs 9,100 per month, approved for type 2 diabetes, doses up to 1 mg.
- Wegovy: Rs 5,660 to Rs 16,400 per month, approved for weight loss, doses up to 2.4 mg.
- Results: At the same weekly dose, a good quality generic is expected to work like the original. The bigger difference is the maximum dose available, not the brand name.
- Best choice: Generic for budget-conscious diabetes patients and early weight loss; Wegovy (or a generic with weight management doses) when you need the full 2.4 mg dose; Ozempic or Wegovy if you want the longest safety track record.
First, What Exactly Are We Comparing?
Ozempic and Wegovy are both made by Novo Nordisk, the company that discovered semaglutide.
- Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and comes in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg weekly doses. It is often used off-label for weight loss.
- Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management and goes up to a higher 2.4 mg weekly dose.

Generic semaglutide is the same molecule made by Indian companies like Natco, Eris, Glenmark, Alkem, Zydus, Sun Pharma, Torrent and Dr Reddy’s, after the patent expired on 20 March 2026. Each company sells it under its own brand name, like Semanat, Sundae, GLIPIQ, Semasize, Semaglyn, Noveltreat or Obeda. You can see the full list in our guide on generic semaglutide brands in India.
Novo Nordisk also sells two “second brands” through Indian partners: Poviztra (same as Wegovy, sold by Emcure) and Extensior (same as Ozempic, sold by Abbott). These are the original molecule, just under a different name and usually at a lower price.

Price Comparison: How Much Can You Save?
This is where the difference really shows. Here are the approximate monthly prices as of October 2026:
| Option | Monthly Price |
| Generic semaglutide vials (Natco, Eris, Glenmark) | Rs 1,290 to Rs 1,760 |
| Generic semaglutide pens (Alkem, Zydus, Dr Reddy’s and others) | Rs 1,800 to Rs 4,500 |
| Sun Pharma Noveltreat (weight management, up to 2.4 mg) | Rs 3,600 to Rs 8,000 |
| Poviztra (Novo’s second Wegovy brand) | Rs 3,999 to Rs 8,999 |
| Ozempic | Rs 5,660 to Rs 9,100 |
| Wegovy | Rs 5,660 to Rs 16,400 |
Prices are approximate launch prices or MRPs and may vary by pharmacy and strength.
What does one year of treatment cost?
Monthly prices can be misleading because the dose goes up over the first few months. Here is a rough idea of the first-year medicine cost with the usual dose escalation:
| Option | Approx. Cost for 1 Year |
| Generic semaglutide vial (up to 1 mg) | Rs 15,500 to Rs 21,000 |
| Generic semaglutide pen (up to 1 mg) | Rs 21,600 to Rs 54,000 |
| Poviztra (up to 2.4 mg) | About Rs 95,000 |
| Ozempic (up to 1 mg) | About Rs 1,04,760 |
| Wegovy (up to 2.4 mg) | About Rs 1,66,810 |
These are estimates at MRP based on standard dose increases. Your actual cost depends on the dose your doctor decides and how long you stay at each step.

In simple words, a patient on a generic vial may spend less in one full year than a Wegovy patient spends in just two months at the maintenance dose. For detailed price breakdowns, read Ozempic cost in India, Wegovy cost in India and the cost of generic semaglutide injection in India.
Will You Lose the Same Weight on Generic Semaglutide?
This is the most important question, so let us be clear.
At the same weekly dose, a good quality generic is expected to give results similar to the original. Generics are approved by CDSCO after bioequivalence studies, which show that the medicine reaches the blood in similar amounts and at a similar speed as the original. Sun Pharma’s Noveltreat was also approved for weight management after a Phase III clinical trial in Indian patients.
There are, however, no large long-term trials directly comparing a generic brand with Ozempic or Wegovy for weight loss. Most of what we know about semaglutide’s results comes from the original Novo Nordisk trials:
- Wegovy 2.4 mg: around 15% average body weight loss over 68 weeks in the STEP-1 trial.
- Ozempic up to 1 mg in diabetes: around 4 to 8 kg average weight loss, along with better blood sugar control.
The real reason two patients get different results is usually the dose, not the brand:
- Ozempic and most generics stop at 1 mg, which gives moderate weight loss.
- Wegovy and a few generics like Noveltreat go up to 4 mg, which gives noticeably more weight loss.
So if your doctor feels you need the full 2.4 mg dose for weight loss, choosing a generic that only goes up to 1 mg will give you less weight loss, even though it is the same medicine. Other factors like diet, protein intake, activity, sleep and missed doses also affect results a lot.
Is Generic Semaglutide as Safe as Ozempic and Wegovy?
The side effects are the same for all three: nausea, vomiting, acidity, constipation or loose motions, mostly in the first few weeks and after each dose increase.
Where they differ is track record and quality control:
- Ozempic and Wegovy have years of global safety data and very consistent manufacturing.
- Generics have been on the market only since March 2026. In July 2026, Dr Reddy’s paused supply of Obeda, and Torrent and USV recalled select batches of Semalix and Usema, because of an issue with the active ingredient. The companies said there were no patient safety concerns, but it shows that quality can vary from maker to maker.
We have covered this topic in detail in our article on whether generic semaglutide is as safe as Ozempic.
Vial vs Pen: The Hidden Difference
Much of the price difference between options actually comes from the device, not the medicine:
- Vials are the cheapest, but you need to draw the correct dose with a syringe every week. A small mistake can mean too much or too little medicine.
- Pens cost more, but they are easier, cleaner and more accurate, especially for first-time users and older patients.
- Wegovy’s FlexTouch pen and Ozempic’s pen are well tested and simple to use.
If you choose a vial to save money, make sure your doctor or nurse teaches you the correct technique before you start.
Which One Should You Choose?
There is no single “best” option. It depends on your health, goal and budget. Here is a simple guide:
Choose generic semaglutide if:
- You have type 2 diabetes and need good sugar control at a low cost
- You need moderate weight loss and a dose up to 1 mg is enough
- Budget is your main concern and you plan long-term treatment
- You are comfortable with a vial, or can afford a generic pen
Choose a generic with weight management doses (like Noveltreat) if:
- Your main goal is weight loss and you need doses up to 2.4 mg
- You want a lower price than Wegovy but the same dose range
Choose Wegovy or Poviztra if:
- You need the full 2.4 mg dose for weight loss
- You want the original molecule with the longest track record
- You have heart disease along with obesity (Wegovy is proven to reduce heart attack and stroke risk in such patients)
- Poviztra is a good middle option if you want the original at a lower price
Choose Ozempic if:
- You have type 2 diabetes and prefer the original brand
- A dose up to 1 mg is enough for you
If you want even more weight loss than semaglutide gives, your doctor may also discuss Mounjaro (tirzepatide), which costs more but generally gives greater results. Read our comparisons of Wegovy vs Mounjaro and Mounjaro vs Ozempic.

Can You Switch from Ozempic or Wegovy to Generic Semaglutide?
Yes, many patients are doing this to save money. Since it is the same molecule, the switch is usually smooth, but a few points are important:
- Talk to your doctor first. Never switch on your own based on a chemist’s suggestion.
- Match the dose correctly. You usually continue on the same weekly dose you were taking, provided the new brand offers that strength.
- Check the maximum dose. If you are on Wegovy 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg, many generics will not have that strength. Your doctor may suggest a weight management brand that does, or Poviztra.
- Learn the new device. A vial or a different pen works differently. Ask for a demonstration before your first injection.
- Watch for side effects in the first 2 to 3 weeks. Some patients notice small changes in nausea or appetite after switching.
- Stick to one brand. Switching every month to whichever is cheapest makes it harder for your doctor to judge how you are responding.
How to Buy Safely
Whichever option you choose:
- Buy only from a licensed chemist or a verified online pharmacy with a valid prescription
- Check the manufacturer, batch number, expiry date, MRP and seal
- Make sure the medicine was stored in a fridge before you bought it
- Avoid sellers on Instagram, WhatsApp or unknown websites, as fake pens have been reported in India
And remember, semaglutide is not suitable for everyone. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with a history of pancreatitis should not start it without proper medical advice. Frequently Asked Questions
Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?
It contains the same active medicine, semaglutide. Most generics are made by chemical synthesis while Ozempic is made using recombinant DNA technology, and generics are approved after bioequivalence studies. The main practical differences are price, device, dose range and track record.
Is generic semaglutide the same as Wegovy?
It is the same molecule, but Wegovy goes up to a 2.4 mg dose and is approved for weight management. Many generics are approved mainly for diabetes and go only up to 1 mg, so they are not always a direct substitute.
Which is cheaper, generic semaglutide or Ozempic?
Generic semaglutide is much cheaper, starting from about Rs 1,290 per month for vials, compared with Rs 5,660 to Rs 9,100 per month for Ozempic.
Will I lose less weight on generic semaglutide?
Not if you take the same weekly dose of a good quality generic. Most differences in weight loss come from the dose (1 mg vs 2.4 mg), diet, activity and regular use, not the brand.
Which generic semaglutide is closest to Wegovy?
Sun Pharma’s Noveltreat is positioned for weight management with doses up to 2.4 mg, like Wegovy. Poviztra is Novo Nordisk’s own second Wegovy brand, so it is the original molecule at a lower price.
Can I switch from Wegovy to generic semaglutide?
Yes, under your doctor’s guidance. Make sure the generic brand offers the dose you need, and learn how to use the new device properly.
Is Ozempic better than generic semaglutide?
Ozempic has a longer safety record and very consistent quality, while generics offer the same molecule at a fraction of the price. For many patients, a reputed generic is a sensible choice, but the decision should be made with your doctor.
Final Word
Generic semaglutide has made GLP-1 treatment affordable for lakhs of Indians, and for many patients it is a smart and practical choice. Ozempic and Wegovy still have the advantage of a longer track record and, in Wegovy’s case, the full 2.4 mg weight loss dose. The right answer depends on your goal, the dose you need, your budget and how comfortable you are with the device.
