The gallbladder is a pear shaped pouch like structure situated below the liver and stores bile which is secreted by the liver and pumps bile into the intestine for the digestion of food.

Gallstones are pieces of solid material that form in the gallbladder. These stones develop because cholesterol and pigments in bile sometimes form hard particles.

The two main types of gallstones are:

Cholesterol stones: Usually yellow-green in color, approximately 80% of gallstones are cholesterol stones.

Pigment stones: These stones are smaller and darker and are made up of bilirubin.

Several factors may come together to create gallstones, including:

  • Nausea, Vomiting.
  • Other gastrointestinal problems, including bloating, indigestion and heartburn.

Infection / Inflammation of GB (Cholecystitis), perforation of GB , pus in GB (Empyema) & jaundice (due to slippage of stone into the common bile duct), Acute pancreatitis (severe pain in abdomen) and rarely carcinoma gall bladder.

It is performed under general anaesthesia making small key holes in the abdomen through which the telescope and thin & long instruments are introduced and surgery is performed by seeing inside of the abdomen on a TV monitor and diseased gallbladder and along with all stones are removed permanently.

Pre & Post Surgery Instructions

  • Any pre-op instructions that are to be given to patient by the surgeon depend on pre operative condition of the patient and should be followed very diligently.
  • After the operation patient will be kept in the ICU which may vary from few minutes to few hours.
  • Patient may feel nauseated in the immediate post-operative period, and patient may even vomit which should not cause any worry. This generally gets over after few hours.
  • Patient is generally allowed to have sips of water immediately after the operation and liquids on day of operation. Patient is allowed to have normal home cooked meals of choice from the next morning at breakfast and patient should have small frequent meals for some days.
  • Patient will be discharged on the next day of operation unless there is some associated medical/social problems.
